It’s the simple things that make life worth living, and when it comes to clubs, you can’t get much simpler than “one big room with an even bigger Funktion-One soundsystem,” as Shelter’s head of marketing, Charro-Nathan Tanamal, describes the Amsterdam venue. Sitting on the north bank of the River IJ, this purpose-built subterranean club first opened its doors in 2016, beneath the A’DAM Tower creative hub. Since reopening post-pandemic, following a city-wide protest of Covid regulations by clubs, the space has hosted The Martinez Bros, Sama’ Abdulhadi, Sansibar, Gerd Jansen and Maya Jane Coles, to name just a handful. “The first few months back open have seen an outstanding amount of support from our patrons every weekend,” says Tanamal. “It feels like we were never closed.”
